I Found Something Unusual Under My Back Seat… and It Kept Growing

On a quiet Saturday morning while vacuuming my car, I reached under the back seat and found something dry, curled, and covered with tiny spines.

Curious, I brought it inside and searched online, only to realize my heart had stumbled onto danger—it was the shed skin of a Lonomia caterpillar, one of the most venomous in the world.

Its spines can release toxins that stop blood from clotting, cause internal bleeding, organ failure, or even death, and even shed skins can be hazardous if particles go airborne. I immediately called pest control, who confirmed it, carefully removed the skin, and checked every corner of my car for live caterpillars—thankfully finding none. Relieved but shaken, I realized how easily hidden danger can slip into daily life, so now I always keep gloves in my trunk and never touch unfamiliar debris with bare hands.
